Canal de Isabel II origins goes back to June 1851 when Queen Isabel II resolved by Royal Decree the creation of a company with the objective of building a reservoir and a channel of over 70 kilometres in order to carry water as far as the city of Madrid from the Lozoyo river.
Nowadays, the business group Canal de Isabel II created in 2012 is formed of approximately thirty companies, providing as a whole, service to 9, 73 million residents (6, 63 in Spain and 3, 10 in Latin-America) and employing more than 6.100 people directly and close to 12.000 indirectly.
The companies which it is formed of are dedicated to the following three types of activities:
- Management of the integral water cycle in Spain, Columbia, Ecuador, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Brazil.
- Support services to the management of the integral water cycle in Spain, Columbia, Ecuador, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Brazil.
- Synergic activities relating to the integral water cycle management such as the generation of hydraulic energy, telecommunications and information technologies, among others. These activities are carried out by companies of the group, located in Spain and Columbia.
- Urban cleaning and management of urban residues in Columbia
